VELOPHARYNGEAL INCOMPETENCE

Individuals who present to Speech Pathologists/Therapists with difficulty with the clarity of their communication may be experiencing velopharyngeal incompetence. More commonly but not exclusively found after repair of cleft palate, such nasality and lack of clarity of the voice may propel the individual into voice difficulty. Voicecraft® skills assist the clinician to diagnose, assess and treat this issue, using a consistent, sequential approach. After full analysis of the problem, with or without nasendoscopic, objective evaluation, the necessary rearrangement of the larynx and supraglottic resonating system to achieve the type of vocal projection which masks hypernasality is possible. With Voicecraft® techniques, these skills are readily learnt and generate enthusiastic acceptance as the voice immediately begins to sound clearer, brighter and more acceptable. With a more acceptable voice, requests for repetition quickly reduce and the speaker's confidence is restored.
